CNC Spark Erosion Grinding Machine  

for honey-comb repairing

      

      The CNC Spark Erosion Grinding Machine, designed and integrated by SDL Technologies Pte Ltd, Singapore (www.sdltech.com.sg), consists of a base of 4-axis CNC machining center, a SEG (Spark Erosion Grinding) system and a PC-based CNC controller. It has been successfully used for years in Singapore aviation industry for parts repairing.

      The SEG system is an electronic discharging machining system. It utilizes EDM Technology to arc-grind to finish size and shape on metal parts. Electrical current is carried through a rotating electrode to remove stock through a purely electrical action. The SEG CNC can be used on HONEYCOMB sections only. It is not applicable to solid sheet stock machining. The process utilizes water with soluble coolant and rust inhibitor to prevent bacterial growth. The fluid acts to flush away removed material and to control the work piece temperature. The process provides a clean, burr free edge on the honeycomb when the speed, feed and voltage setting are properly adjusted. No subsequent finishing of the machined surface should be required.

      The 4-axis CNC machining center provides precise X, Y, Z and C movement. The PC based CNC controller, CNCSWIFTTM, controls both the CNC machine and SEG system. It provides standard G codes and M codes and graphic input. It also takes the CNC programs from CAD/CAM systems, Machining simulation function is provided to view tool path and machine status to prevent programming mistakes.
